Hello, welcome to the 2008-2013 World Football Draft Game. Basically, 8 players have spent the last couple weeks picking players to make a team (you can see how they did it in this thread pldraftgame.freeforums.net/thread/45/2008-world-football-draft-round ). and they are now ready to go head-to-head against each other to win your vote - which do you think is the better team? The voter has both the squad-sheet and the bios/tactics to consider!
The key rule for this edition of the game is that players are to be judged on the basis of their performances for club and country between 2008 and 2013, - so what they did outside of these years, is not directly relevant here.
Additionally, voters are requested to please justify the votes you cast: an explanation of why you voted for the team you did would be much appreciated and would add to the game as a whole. If you vote but don't justify your selection, then that vote may be discarded when totting up the final results. Please vote and adhere to the rules on each match thread.
Good luck to Applebonkers and Lewinick

Bios
van der Sar
Euro 2008: team of the tournament.
08-09: PFA Team of the Year, UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year, a top-flight world record of 1311 minutes without conceding. 21 clean sheets in 33 league games, 7 in 10 Champions League games.
10-11: PFA Team of the Year. Bowed out at the top, a 3rd Champions League Final in 4 seasons. Not the dream ending as Barca pulled Utd's pants down. Still made the Champions League Team of the Season though.
Didn't concede a single goal in 11/12 or 12/13.
Srna
Croatia's most capped player. Captain of the Donetsk side who dominate Ukraine lately and are growing in Europe since winning the UEFA Cup in 2009 where Srna won man of the match in the final.
Ukrainian Premier League Player of the Year in 08/09 & 09/10. Champions League Team of the Season in 2010/11. Last season he managed 12 assists and 15 clean sheets in 26 matches. I'm thinking Leighton Baines on steroids.
Thiago Silva
Made the Team of the Season in his last 3 seasons (2 in Serie A, 1 in France). Named Serie A defender on the Year in 2011. UEFA Team of the Year in 2011 & 2012. Strong, intelligent, technical, athletic.
Chiellini
He looks like a hard-nosed old fashioned stopper, which in many ways is true. He is however deceptively quick and capable on the ball, although he keeps it simple still. Named Serie A defender of the Year in 2008, 2009 & 2010. It took Thiago Silva to end the streak. An ex left back, he was a CB in those 3 years whilst he's now left of a back 3 under Conte.
Jerome Boateng
He was Germany's left back in the World Cup, their right back in the Euros and is currently their centre back after controversially being chosen ahead of Hummels in recent qualifiers. Loew's faith was on the back of a real growth season for Bayern where in the big games in the second half of the season especially he really stepped up. He started the majority of matches in this great season. Tall and powerful, his speed is a real asset which no doubt plays a part in his positional versatility.
Zanetti
A freak of nature, no Inter player played more minutes in their historic treble winning season than Zanetti. Such a rounded and experienced footballer his versatility has simply grown over the years. For example in that treble season of 09/10 he played 19 times at right midfield, 19 times at left back (including v Messi in the Champions League semis), 9 times in centre midfield (including the Champions League final), 4 times at right back and 3 times in left midfield. Pure no frills dependability, leadership, sacrifice, nous and athleticism even now at 40.
Schweinsteiger
Footballer of the Year in Germany last Year, World Cup All Star Team in 2010, Ballon D'or votes in 2010 & 11 and inevitably in 2013 after his part in Bayern's insane season. A pretty complete centre midfielder who plays anywhere across the middle.
Moutinho
The move to Porto set the ball rolling where he really grew in a side who won the title in each of his 3 seasons there, helping cement himself in the Portugal starting XI. He can play deep, in a 4-3-3 or in a more advanced playmaker role. He's a little pass-master but with a dogged side to him to protect too. 12 assists in 27 games last season highlights his creative and set-piece ability.
Neymar
He's only 21 but he's packed a lot in already. Won everything with Santos the pinnacle of which was the Copa Libertadores in 2011 (their Champions League). He won the player of that tournament as well as the best player in the Brazilian League helping him to 10th place in the Ballon D'or. Last Year he got votes again, finishing 13th. Won South American Footballer of the Year for 2011 & 2012.
His real break-out performance on the World stage in this year's Confederations Cup should ensure another good Ballon D'or showing. The goals in that tournament were part of 26 in 42 caps for a guy who is mainly a left winger. As his early Barcelona career highlights too he is a prolific assister, aided by dangerous set-piece delivery.
Ibrahimović
08/09: League and cup double with Inter Milan, top scorer in Serie A and named Serie A Footballer of the Year.
09/10: 4 trophies with Barcelona and was named in the UEFA Team of the Year.
10/11: League with AC Milan and once again named Serie A Footballer of the Year.
11/12: SuperCoppa Italia, top scorer in Serie A, then in Euro 2012 was the only player to make the Team of the Tournament from a country that didn't make it out the group stages.
12/13: Won the league with PSG, named Ligue Un Footballer of the Year, top scorer in Ligue Un (admittedly not a great league), and most assists in last season's Champions League.
Total in the period: 152 league starts, 113 goals, 40 assists. Numbers don't do the swagger justice though. Whether it's centre forward for his clubs or attacking midfield for his country this guy can mix it with anyone outside of Ronaldo and Messi.
Eto'o
In 08/09 he scored 30 league goals and the winner in the Champions League final. In 09/10 he played more as a winger for Inter in their treble season, the goals went down and the assists went up, for example assisting Milito's second in the Champions League final. In 10/11 he went back to centre forward more often scoring 37 and assisting 15 in 52 matches in all comps. Then he went to Anzhi in 11/12, he was 30 but it was annoying as he clearly still had a lot to offer at the top level. 5th in the 2009 Ballon D'or, 12th in 2010 and 8th in 2011. Best Cameroonian in the draft imo.

Tactics

Bios
Hugo Lloris - A brilliant goalkeeper, not as outstanding as others in this draft but certainly one who can be counted upon. Excellent with the ball at his feet, as well as sweeping up
in behind defenders when needed. Notable individual honours include France GKOTY 2009, 2010 & 2012.
Dani Alves - In my humble opinion, the best full back of his generation, certainly the most successful. The complete modern full back, as good offensively as he is
defensively. Has played a crucial role in much of Barcelona's ludicrous success, particularly offering an alternative option for the deeper players to hit.
Rio Ferdinand - Doesn't really need me to big him up, we all know just how good he is/has been during this time period. Possibly the best defender in Europe in 2008,
winning the PL & CL, as well as being in the PL & World XIs.
John Terry - Captain Leader Legend etc. Unfashionable because he's a berk. Doesn't hide the fact that he's one of the standout defenders of the 00's. Uefa TOTY 2008, 2009. Uefa Best defender 2008, 2009. Should compliment Rio very well, even if they'd like to poke each others eyes out.
Fabio Coentrao - Like Dani Alves, another brilliant modern full back. Offers a huge amount going forward, as well as being a very good defender. Was named in the Euro 2012 TOTT for his
exceptional performances for Portugal.
Sergio Busquets - Don't think it's unreasonable or hyperbolic to say he's the best defensive midfielder of his generation. The complete footballer, few read the game better, pass better, tackle better, make more interceptions. Could yada on for 2000 words about him and his honours since 2008, don't think I need to.
Michael Carrick - Famously the only midfielder Man Utd have actually had over the past 5 years. Has had huge success there and more recently has come under the media spotlight. Underrated by many, overrated by some, he's still a fantastic player who's best known for his range of passing, technique and tactical nouse.
Wesley Sneijder - Between 2008-2010, not many would argue that Sneijder was one of (if not the) best attacking midfielders in world football. Named in the TOTT at Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010, he was also MoM in the 2010 UCL final, a vital part of Inter's glittering season. A brilliant reader of the game, he's known for his passing and long range shooting, as well as capability
to split even the best defences.
Eden Hazard - An explosive winger who's a nightmare for defenders, best known for his pace and trickery, supplemented by incredible goals and asssits tallies. In his final 3 years at Lille Hazard notched 44 goals and 38 assists, form which he's carried on at Chelsea notching 13 goals and 20 assists in a debut year where he was named
in the PL TOTS.
Luis Suarez - After Busquets, probably the key player in the side. Suarez will play as a wing forward, something he's been accustomed to at Liverpool and Uruguay. Scored 77 goals in his final 2 seasons at Ajax, and has carried on that form at Liverpool, albeit with fewer goals, but in a more difficult league. Named in the PL TOTS in 2013 as well as winning POTT at the Copa America 2011, which Uruguay won.
Robin Van Persie - Arguably the best out and out striker in World football over the past 3 years. Don't think I need to write much here, we all know what he's known for and how he operates. Just as capable of scoring from 30 yards he is from 3, in his full season so far at Man Utd he won the golden boot, the PL and provided a series of match winning performances. Match winner.
Tactics
My lineup:
Here's how I expect AB to lineup:
The team and the tactical system is based on rock solid foundations. Nobody (I assume) would argue that Sergi Busquets
has been the best defensive midfielder in this, or indeed (imo) in any period. We all know what he's best at and that'll be utilised
here along with Michael Carrick, who along with Busquets will dictate the tempo of the match, winning the ball and allowing the
side to dominate possesion, before handing over creative duties to the big guns further upfield. Given their defensive
natures both SB & MC will be expected to be able to provide cover for the full backs on their adventures forward.
Busquets in particular is a master at this. If AB sets up how I anticipate he will, with Neymar and Eto'o on the 'wings' then I'll expect
to see them cutting inside a lot and compacting the central areas. SB & MC should be able to combat this, shielding RF & JT.
It's anticipated that Dani Alves will do what he does best, maraud forward down the right flank. He'll be one of
the key features of the team's attack, as he has been for Barcelona over their incredibly successful period. As part
of that, Suarez will be nominally positioned on the right, but will drift inside in support of Van Persie, reaking havoc
as is his way. We've seen recently how Suarez can form a formidable partnership with Sturridge, imagine that
with a striker of Van Persie's quality (Sorry Danny). Of course Neymar will likely be stationed on the left side, and so will
cause problems for Alves. It's a battle I expect Alves to win, given his quality, athleticism and experience, and
on top of the fact that AB doesn't have a truly natural attacking left back to support Neymar.
On the left side, Coentrao will also attack with pace going forward, but will be a little more reserved than Alves.
I expect the combination of Coentrao and Hazard to cause big problems for Zanetti, who was perhaps not at his most
athletic during the period. If, as I expect, Eto'o is playing on the right side, then I can see him drifting and not
offering defensive support for Zanetti v Coentrao and Hazard.
For me the biggest weakness in AB's side (properly splitting hairs here), is Boateng. I've never been totally
convinced by him, and although he's been very successful with Bayern I don't think he stands up to the other defenders
in this draft. I'd really fancy Van Persie against him in one v one situations, with ammunition provided by Sneijder,
and with Suarez keeping Thiago Silva busy in the box.
The attacking formation will look something like this:
The key rule for this edition of the game is that players are to be judged on the basis of their performances for club and country between 2008 and 2013, - so what they did outside of these years, is not directly relevant here.

Tactics
I was feeling quite smug about picking 12 players that let me play about 300 formations but it just meant a headache trying to choose one. If I wanted my best 11 players Mata would be in and Zanetti would be at left back, but I've picked for opponents and teammates.
In the end it was his dangerous attacking full backs and 2 defensive mids which were factors, I went 4-3-3. With Alves & Coentrao one option is more defensive minded wingers, I've gone balls-out alternative of Neymar and Eto'o being a deterrent in themselves, but with the vagina-out compromise of Moutinho to shift out left to help if Alves does attack and Zanetti right if Coentrao does. With both Carrick and Busquets very much sitters, style wise regardless of how they are used, there is hopefully less need for another deeper man alongside Schweinsteiger, allowing him to fully concentrate on Sneijder, who is obviously a very dangerous player if allowed space.
His team dilemma looks like Suarez Ajax style right & Hazard left, Walcott right with more specialist Hazard left, or Walcott right & Suarez left. Lewis did accidently tease me pre-draw saying he considered an RVP, Suarez and Neymar front 3, suggesting Suarez on the right. Since then he picked Walcott quite early and Hazard last so I'm leaning towards Walcott right, Suarez left and Hazard sat on his rap-video sized derriere.
Busquets is almost immune to pressing so the emphasis is more on making life hard for the 3 attacking mids/wingers in front of him, both in terms of cutting off angles for the easy pass to them with Moutinho and Zanetti, and having players quickly in their face if they do get it. The one exception is Walcott. He can be devastating but in a more predictable/one-dimensional way. I'm happy to let Walcott do whatever he wants in midfield and touch-line areas. I've put Boateng there but want him narrow and deep rather than engaging Walcott high up the pitch and attacking himself. If it's Suarez it's the same concept, he's desperate to wriggle towards goal so a right-footed centre back has strengths here. Left back is definitely his least played of his 3 positions but aside from the World Cup he does have experience being used to keep high-profile wingers away from goal.
Other side Srna is free to engage Suarez high up the pitch and obviously attack himself. Zanetti is key here, whilst it was obviously Maicon being a bit of a legend that made Maicon. a bit of a legend, Zanetti was huge in his success. He could rampage forward knowing he had one of the great right backs in his own right to cover his back. Zanetti is comfortable at right mid, right back, centre mid and defensive mid so aside from aid with the dangerous Suarez, he's there to help Schweinsteiger crowd Sneijder or simply carry the ball forward himself. The lack of a box to box man alongside Busquets will hopefully mean less central distraction from all these other options.
Eto'o's job is to try and worry Coentrao and Terry. When Srna/Zanetti get forward he has the choice to tuck in to become a centre forward, the option is then Zlatan to be drop a bit and be the support striker, if Srna is crossing though I advise him to get that pony-tailed noggin and scissor-kicking boot right in there. The set-up easily morphs into this for example :
In build-up play I want Zlatan like a false 9 here to make up for the lack of a central attacking midfielder. The ball sticks to him so he's always an outlet; he's got through-balls to Neymar and Eto'o in his armoury, plus is a threat from long-shots.
Corners and crossed free kicks: Neymar and Moutinho.
Free kicks: curlers Srna. Blasts Zlatan.
Penalties: Zlatan.
That's me. Good luck Lewis

cause problems for Alves.
